New Orleans
I stopped at the airport in New Orleans for a little while on my way to New York on the 26th, just a few days before Katrina hit. I remember how calm and empty the place seemed. People knew a storm was coming, but they didn't seem to be too alarmed about it. Now when I see pictures of the airport on the news, it's full of refugees, the sick, and the dying. It makes me wonder how similar the situation would be if it had been terrorist bombs instead of a storm that destroyed the levees. Would Bush have done a better job of preventing disaster and helping the poor in that city? Would he have taken credit for having "saved" them, like the way he takes credit for the way he "saved" America from 9/11?
